GUWAHATI, Oct 26: The United Bodo People’s Organisation (UBPO) has urged the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) to immediately release abducted tea garden employee Gautam Basumatary unconditionally.

In a statement issued on Saturday, UBPO President Manoranjan Basumatary and General Secretary Pitambar Brahma expressed deep concern over the abduction and urged ULFA-I to release the tea garden employee.

Basumatary, a factory manager at Himalayan Tea Company, was reportedly abducted by a group of armed militants from the tea estate in Jagun in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district, on October 23. The tea estate is owned by tea planter Radha Chetia.

Sharing further details, UBPO leaders claimed Basumatary along with the tea estate Manager were abducted on the fateful night. However, the Manager was released as he was unable to walk. Basumatary, however, remains in the custody of the abductors.

There has been no communication or ransom demand from the abductors so far though police and family members believe that the ULFA-I militants are behind the abduction.

Basumatary comes from a humble background in Houjunpur, Jagun, UBPO leaders said. The organisation said due to the abduction Basumatary’s family is distressed and awaiting news about his whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police, Gaurav Abhijit Dilip, stated that the police have conducted raids at multiple locations and gathered inputs from CCTV footage to trace the abductors.

The authorities have also sealed the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border to prevent any cross-border movements linked to the case. Expressing confidence, Dilip said all efforts are on to trace Basumatary and bring him home safely.
