Guwahati, March 19: The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), led by Pramod Boro, on Wednesday said it will contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections independently.
Boro recently met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.
Speaking to reporters, Boro said there has been “no change in circumstances,” reiterating the party’s earlier decision to go solo in the polls.
Sources indicated that Shah is believed to have urged Boro not to align with the Congress, noting that such a move could significantly alter electoral equations in constituencies under the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
Meanwhile, the BJP and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) have allied for the upcoming Assembly elections, excluding the UPPL, which was previously part of the broader alliance. However, sources suggested that informal or tacit understandings between the BJP and UPPL may still exist.
“We will contest all 15 seats in the BTC and four to five seats outside it. We have stated this earlier as well. We were in the NDA, and since we are contesting the elections, we have made it clear that we will go independently, not with the NDA,” Boro said, effectively ruling out any tie-up with either the NDA or the Congress.
Sources familiar with the developments said discussions between Shah and Boro also touched upon the implementation of the BTR Accord, as well as Boro’s recent nomination to the Rajya Sabha.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has already confirmed the seat-sharing arrangement with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the BPF. The AGP will contest 26 seats, while the BPF will contest 11. The BJP will field candidates in the remaining constituencies of the 126-member Assembly.
