US Nationals from Baptist Mission detained in Tezpur for visa violations

Guwahati, Feb 4: Police in Tezpur, Assam, detained two individuals from the USA associated with the Baptist Mission, accusing them of violating visa regulations. The detained pair have been identified as John Matthew Boone and Michael James Flinchum.

According to the police, both Boone and Flinchum came to India on an e-tourist visa and had been staying in Tezpur for the last few days.

They were reportedly involved in religious preaching at the campus of the Baptist Christian Hospital at Mission Chariali in Tezpur for the past month.

In this regard, the Kacharigaon police outpost recorded a GD No. 03/2024 dated February 2 and imposed a penalty of Rs. 500 (INR 41,486/-) on each of them.

Sonitpur Additional SP Madhurima Das said, “As per the tourist visa norms, a person touring a foreign land cannot attend any religious preaching or conversation programme or promote any religious ideology. They were allowed to go after they had paid the penalty amount.”
