Violence returns to Manipur after brief lull, suspected Kuki militants attack Police station

Must read

Imphal, Oct 19: Manipur is once again on the boil after suspected Kuki militants attacked the Borobekera police station, located 30 km from Jiribam town, on Saturday.

Police sources said the Kuki militants targeted the police station with automatic weapons and sophisticated bombs. In this audacious attack three nearby houses were also burnt down.

Police officials downplayed the incident terming it as a sporadic incident that shouldn’t be linked with the current ethnic turmoil of the state. “Such incidents happen all over the country…we are looking into it and trying our best,” Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh said.

He informed that the firing had stopped early in the morning on Saturday and some houses, which were partially burned down from earlier incidents, also bore the brunt of the attack.

This attack comes in the wake of Blooming School, run by Rev. Benjamin Shakum, being burned by suspected militants in Jiribam. Several Kuki organisations have condemned the act.

On the other hand, legislators from Meitei, Kuki-Zo-Hmar, and Naga communities on the initiative of the central government are holding talks to restore peace in the strife-torn state.
