Shillong, March 28: The Voice of People Party (VPP) has suspended North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum for alleged ‘anti-party activities’.
In a letter dated March 24, 2025, addressed to the legislator, VPP vice president Dr. Kara H. Shen said, “After due deliberation, the Party finds your explanation unsatisfactory and, in exercise of its authority under Article III, Clause 5 of the Constitution of the Voice of the People Party, you are hereby suspended from the Party for a period of 3 years with immediate effect.”
He said the order was passed by the State Executive Committee of the party after deliberation on the reply of the legislator to a show-cause noticed served to him by the party on March 1, 2025.
The party had on March 1 served a show cause notice to the legislator over his alleged anti-party activities. On the response of the MLA to the show-cause, Shen said the reply was rather defensive, confrontational, and lacked any sign of regret for actions deemed detrimental to the Party’s interests instead of expressing remorse or acknowledging the concerns raised.
VPP also remarked that “Your (Nongrum) approach in responding to the Show Cause Notice further indicates a defiance of party discipline and principles, which cannot be overlooked.”
During the period of suspension, Nongrum shall cease to hold any position, responsibility, or membership rights within the Party; he shall not represent the Party in any forum or public platform; he has also been advised to refrain from any actions that may further tarnish the image of the Party.
The party also suspended four other members along with Nongrum for anti-party activities. They are: Snarbor Laloo, Imti Jamir, Wilstone Sohshang and Richinbusiness Marwein.
