West Jaintia Hills gets ‘Halfway Home’ to rehabilitate people with mental illness

Shillong, June 29: ‘Halfway Home’ for rehabilitating people with mental illness was inaugurated on Thursday at Sabah Muswang in West Jaintia Hills.

Halfway Home is an initiative aimed at providing help to individuals with mental illness who are in need of shelter and support.

Guests at the inauguration ceremony included government officials, community leaders, Unitarian church leaders.

BS Sohliya, Deputy Commissioner West Jaintia Hills District, addressed the audience as a chief guest and in his speech, emphasized the significance of community involvement and the vital role played by institutions like the Halfway Home to support people with mental illness.

Sohliya praised the Dobar Chnong Sabah Muswang for supporting the project and he encouraged all present in the gathering to continue supporting such initiatives and work towards a more inclusive and compassionate society.

The inauguration ceremony began with lighting the flaming chalice and Prayer by Rev. S. Laloo of the Unitarian Church, Jowai. The program was chaired by D. Lywiat, Project Director Society of Urban and Rural Empowerment (SURE), followed by a speech by the T. Phawa, Headman of Sabah Muswang village, and a warm welcome speech was given by the Project Coordinator of Halfway Home, N. Shylla, who acknowledged the presence of all the guests and expressed gratitude for their support and participation.

Shylla also provided an overview of the Halfway Home’s mission and emphasized the importance of the services it offers to the patients. She informed that the facility is to cater to the patients who have been treated at different mental hospitals in the state and it will be like a halfway home for them between hospital and being part of the society again.

A guided tour of the facility was also conducted to showcase the various amenities and resources available at the Halfway Home.

Rev Dr HH Mohrmen, Secretary of SURE, said the Society is extremely happy to be able to embark on a new venture and to serve the most vulnerable section of the population.

The inauguration ceremony of the Halfway Home was a momentous occasion, symbolizing the collective commitment towards providing a second chance to individuals seeking to rebuild their lives. The event successfully highlighted the transformative power of rehabilitation programs and community support.
