What is a deepfake?

Deepfakes, a term used for synthetic media, involve the manipulation of videos, images, or audio recordings through advanced artificial intelligence techniques, specifically utilising deep learning.

Renowned for their capacity to produce highly realistic and frequently deceptive content, deepfakes excel, particularly in the domains of facial manipulation and voice synthesis.

The term “deepfake” is a combination of “deep learning” and “fake.” Currently, deepfake media has garnered significant attention for its ability to superimpose one person’s face onto another person’s body in videos, crafting a deceptive illusion of actions or statements that were never actually performed by the individual.

Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & IT on Deepfake:

On Thursday, Union Minister for Communications, Electronics & IT Ashwini Vaishnaw on deepfake said, “Regulations can be in the form of amending existing rules or bringing in new rules or making a new law, which is the most appropriate way we will work on it… All the social media platforms agree that today, extensive set of technologies are available to automatically detect. They agree that yes, there are good technologies which are available, the professors also very categorically said that yes, technologies are available…”

“We have all agreed that within the next about 10 days, we will come up with clear actionable items…All the companies, all the platforms, and the entire industry understood that this is not free speech. They understood that this is something which is really harmful for the society. They understood the need for much heavier regulation on this. So we agree that we will start drafting the regulation today. We’ll start drafting the regulations today itself. And within a very short time frame, we will have a new set of regulations for deep fake…,” he said.

Calling deepfake as a new threat in the society. He said that Government need to take immediate steps.

“Deep fake has emerged as a new threat in the society. We need to take immediate steps. Today a meeting was held with social media platforms. We’ve to focus on four aspects-detection, prevention, reporting mechanism of deep fake and awareness needs to be increased. New regulations will be brought and in the coming weeks, efforts will be made to complete the drafting of regulations…Social media companies, NASSCOM, and professors working on Artificial intelligence (AI) were also present in today’s meeting.”
