Shillong, May 14: How often do we randomly come across people at the mostly unlikely of places, a meeting that can be life changing. And what are the chances of the person you bump into being the chief minister of the state? Well, that was exactly what happened with a group of youngsters last month.
While the Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma was out on a walk through the Rhododendron Trek in Upper Shillong last month, he ran into a group of youth playing cricket at Sanmer, the final stretch of the trek. CM Sangma, known for this passion for cricket and his long association with state’s cricketing fraternity, even joined the young boys for a match and the fun.
Little did the youth of the locality know that a month later after their chance encounter, they would have the privilege of meeting the chief minister again, this time more formally. For the chief minister though, those few minutes of joy and passion stayed with him as he recalled “that moment stayed with me”.
It was not just that moment alone, he also took note of the fact that the young players did not have proper gear yet their passion for the sport was infectious. Moved by their passion and their need for better equipment, he had pledged his support. This promise culminated in the chief minister visiting the Sanmer village for the first time on Wednesday, where he gave cricket equipment to five local cricket teams – Sanmer Cricket Team, Sawmer Cricket Team, ½ Cricket Team, Mawklot Cricket Team, and Umlyngka Cricket Team.
“Nothing gives me more satisfaction than to see the energy and the passion in our youngsters,” he noted while addressing the people of the village, especially the youth, highlighting the government’s commitment to creating platforms for their development. He emphasized the importance of nurturing the youth and providing them with opportunities to excel in sports and music.
He also announced several key initiatives for the Sanmer community. These included the sanctioning of a PA system, financial assistance for the Sanmer Sports and Cultural Club, and a commitment to support the construction of a community hall and a water reservoir.
Daniel Thangkhiew, Political Secretary to the Chief Minister in his speech, noted the chief minister’s leadership and dedication to connecting with people across the state and addressing their needs. He highlighted the chief minister’s proactive approach, emphasising his willingness to travel to various parts of Meghalaya to understand and solve the difficulties faced by communities. Thangkhiew also cited the Chief Minister’s recent sanction of funds to mission-run hospitals as an example of his commitment to public welfare.
The event was organized by the Sanmer Sports, Social, and Cultural Club and attended by community leaders, members of the Dorbar Shnong Sanmer, and enthusiastic residents.
