Shillong, Sep 29: Durga Puja, one of the famous Hindu festivals, is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour in various parts of India.
The five-day festival celebrates Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon king Mahishasura.
Durga Puja usually falls in the months of September or October, according to the Hindu lunar calendar.
Durga Puja is also known as Sharodotsav or Durgotsava. Durga Puja refers to Shardiya Navratri’s five days of festivity, and these five days are observed as Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, and Vijayadashami.
It is believed that the goddess Durga visits Earth every year during these five days to bless her devotees.
When is Durga Puja 2023?
This year, the festival of Navratri will begin on Sunday, October 15, and end on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.

When is Durga Puja celebrated?
Durga Puja begins on the sixth day of Navratri. These days of Durga Puja are respectively known as Shashsti, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, and Dashami.

Navratri Day 1-Â Maa Shailputri Puja:Â Sunday, October 15
Navratri Day 2-Â Maa Brahmacharini Puja:Â Monday, October 16
Navratri Day 3- Maa Chandraghanta Puja: Tuesday, October 17
Navratri Day 4-Â Maa Kushmanda Puja: Wednesday, October 18
Navratri Day 5- Maa Skandamata Puja: Thursday, October 19
Navratri Day 6- Maa Katyayani Puja: Friday, October 20
Navratri Day 7-Maa Kalaratri Puja: Saturday, October 21
Navratri Day 8- Maa Maha Gauri Puja: Sunday, October 22
Navratri Day 9- Maa Siddhidatri Puja: Monday, October 23
Navratri Day 10-Vijayadashami or Maha Dashmi: Tuesday, October 24
