Nongstoin, April 16: In a momentous event, the Catholic Church, Nongstoin Diocese, has successfully elected Wilbert Marwein as the new Bishop of Nongstoin. The episcopal was conducted by his excellency Nuncio Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India, along with all the bishops of North East India.
It was after three years of wait that the Nongstoin Diocese has received its Bishop after the former Bishop, Victor Lyngdoh, was transferred to the Shillong Diocese as the Arch Bishop of Shillong due to the sudden death of (L) Rev. Dominic Jala.
Wilbert Marwein was born at Rangblang in the then Archdiocese of Shillong (now Diocese of Nongstoin). He was ordained priest on April 27, 2003, for the Archdiocese of Shillong, and in 2006 joined the new diocese.
The episcopal of the new Bishop of Nongstoin took place on April 16, 2023, in the presence of a large gathering of priests, sisters, and the Catholic believers from across the diocese. The process of electing a new bishop was a long and rigorous one, involving extensive consultations and deliberations among the bishops of North East India and the Vatican officials.
