Must read

Tura, Feb 20: A herd of wild elephants in search of food entered Darechikgre village, outside Tura, in the early morning hours of Tuesday causing substantial damage to newly constructed cottages at a tourism site where work has been underway.

The incident occurred around 6:00 AM on Tuesday morning.

It was reported that labourers and masons present at the work site fled on seeing the elephants enter the complex.

Fearing for their lives, they sought refuge on rooftops and raised an alarm by beating the roofs with sticks to draw the attention of the villagers.

Although there were no human casualties, PVC pipes and barbed wire fencing were damaged, along with a plastic water tank that was trampled by the herd.

Speaking to Hub News, Ava Shereen S Sangma, Tourism Officer of West Garo Hills, said, “Upon receiving the information, we conducted a visual inspection of the area and observed the damages. The people working on the project were shifted to the Nokma’s residence, where they will spend the night. During the daytime, they will be at the site to complete the work”, added Sangma.

When asked about the time frame for restoration, she said, “It depends on the assessment of the damage done. It might take quite some time, and it also depends on how quickly the contractor can execute the completion.”

The ongoing project falls under the banner of Swadesh Darshan.
