Guwahati, Sept 28: Assam State Jamiat Ulema (ASJU) has threatened to move the Supreme Court (SC) if the Assam government continues what it views as harassment of Muslims under the guise of detecting and deporting foreign nationals from the state.
In a statement here on Saturday, ASJU president Maulana Badaruddin Ajmal, who is also the leader of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), criticized the BJP-led government under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing it of targeting religious minority communities, particularly Muslims, for political gain.
Ajmal emphasized that while his organization does not support the presence of foreign nationals in Assam, they should be identified and deported by legal provisions.
He expressed concern that the Chief Minister is politicizing the issue and dragging Muslims into controversy without adhering to the law.
Ajmal further pointed out that Chief Minister Sarma appears to have rejected the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which was prepared by 52,000 government officials at a significant cost of Rs. 1,220 crore.
According to him, this rejection is part of a strategy to continually harass religious minorities, undermining the legal efforts put into identifying foreigners through the NRC.
