Williamnagar, Aug 14: South Garo Hills police have taken into custody Dr. Dolan S R Marak from Williamnagar Civil Hospital for undertaking a medical termination of pregnancy involving an underage girl who was raped and made pregnant by her brother-in-law.
“The accused doctor has been arrested by South Garo Hills police from Williamnagar today in connection with the Baghmara Women PS Case u/s 376(2)(f)(n)/365/312/201/ 315 IPC R/W Sec 5(j)(ii)(l)(n), 21 POCSO Act, sec 23 Pre-Conception and sec 5(3) of Medical termination of pregnancy Act,” a statement by South Garo Hills DP Rituraj Ravi mentioned.
As per police information, the doctor was arrested on the basis of the statement given by the victim to the Police to the effect that she was taken forcefully to the said doctor’s clinic for the termination of the foetus illegally by the alleged accused person who is her brother-in-law and his friend namely Francis on 11/08/2021 as a result of which now she is having stomach cramp and continuous bleeding.
Ravi informed that the victim is now admitted to hospital and added that during the course of inquiry, records have been found that the doctor was involved in many illegal termination of pregnacies involving minor girls.
The doctor allegedly didn’t check identity card and didn’t do any kind of verification of age before conducting such termination of pregnancies. He didn’t inform any authorities even after being aware of the age and conducted termination of pregnancies without lawful consent.
Further investigation in the matter is under progress.
