Williamnagar, May 6: Williamnagar Government College, the pioneering institution of higher education in East Garo Hills, marked a significant milestone by celebrating its Silver Jubilee on May 6, 2025, commemorating 25 years of dedicated service to education in the region.

The celebration was graced by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills, Dimseritha A. Sangma, who attended as the Chief Guest. Founding member and President H. N. Sangma, other key founding members, Resource Consultant of RUSA S. R. Lyndem, alumni, faculty, and distinguished guests were also present to mark the occasion.

Principal Rajiv K. Marak welcomed the gathering with a heartfelt speech, reflecting on the humble beginnings of the college as a private arts institution and its transformation into a beacon of accessible and quality education in East Garo Hills.

The programme commenced with a prayer of thanksgiving by Rev. Junalson K. Sangma of Kusimkolgre Baptist Church, followed by a moving rendition of the college anthem performed by the students.

A major highlight of the event was the official release of the college’s first-ever magazine, a significant step in documenting the institution’s journey and academic growth.

In his address, S. R. Lyndem, Resource Consultant of RUSA, congratulated the college on achieving this landmark. He remarked, “Many colleges love RUSA, but RUSA only loves a few.” He noted that the college had received ₹12 crore for infrastructure development, and an additional ₹5 crore had recently been sanctioned. He emphasized that the 25th anniversary not only marks a milestone but is also a testament to the tireless efforts made over the years.

A celebratory cake-cutting ceremony was held, led by the Chief Guest, founding members, and the college principal. The event was further enlivened by a mesmerizing fusion music performance by the students, adding vibrancy and joy to the celebration.

Guest of Honour and founding member H. N. Sangma delivered a detailed speech recounting the early days of the college. He expressed deep gratitude to all individuals and groups who supported the institution—through financial aid and manpower. He extended special thanks to former MLA Debora C. Marak for her generous donation, the late Jonathon N. Sangma for constructing the college gate, the Garo Students’ Union, and the 4th Grade Union of that time for their invaluable contributions. He also acknowledged the then Deputy Commissioner, D. P. Wahlang, and the staff of the DC office for their support in establishing the college.

In her keynote speech, Chief Guest Dimseritha A. Sangma congratulated the college on its 25 years of growth and lauded the founding members for their foresight and commitment.

She opened with a quote by Pope Francis:
“Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves… life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.”

She remarked that this quote perfectly encapsulates the selfless work and sacrifice of the college’s founders. Addressing the students, she urged them to recognize and respect the efforts of their teachers and founders who laid the foundation for their brighter future. She encouraged them to reflect on the deeper meaning embedded in the college’s logo, which symbolizes the vision and intellectual legacy of its founders.

She also informed students about the library-cum-coaching centre established by the district administration and encouraged them to utilize the facility to its fullest potential.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of pride and purpose, celebrating the achievements of the past and inspiring hope for the future of Williamnagar Government College.
