With Mawsynram’s tag as ‘Wettest Place on Earth’ at risk, Conrad expresses concern

Must read

Shillong, June 30: Mawsynram, a small village located in Meghalaya, has long held the distinction of being the ‘Wettest Place on Earth’. However, recent changes in weather patterns and rainfall measurements have raised questions about whether Mawsynram can maintain its title.

Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma when questioned about this issue, acknowledged that losing the title of the “Wettest Place on Earth” would be a matter of disappointment for Meghalaya. The Chief Minister emphasized that the situation is beyond human control and attributed it to the natural phenomenon of global warming and climate change.

“It is, of course, a matter of concern for us,” Chief Minister Sangma stated. “The changing weather patterns and climate conditions have an impact on areas like Mawsynram, which have been known for their extraordinary rainfall.”

He further emphasized that while the title holds historical significance for Meghalaya and its people, it is essential to recognize the broader implications of climate change. Sangma stressed the need for concerted efforts to address global warming and mitigate its effects on fragile ecosystems and unique geographical features.
