Tura, Nov 14: A comprehensive workshop on ‘Medical Nutrition Management of Diabetes Mellitus’ for Medical Officers of the District was organised on World Diabetes Day.
The workshop was organised by the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the College of Community Science in collaboration with the District Medical and Health Officer, West Garo Hills, Tura.
The workshop was centred on the “Medical Nutrition Management of Diabetes Mellitus,” aimed to provide valuable insights to Medical Officers within the district.
Thirty-nine Medical Officers, District Trainers, and Mid-Level Health Providers (MLHPs) marked the success of the recent workshop organized by the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the College of Community Science.
Dr Cynthia R Marak, Diabetologist, Tura Civil Hospital, who was one of the resource persons talked about the medical management of diabetes. She emphasised on the importance of meal timings, daily exercise and sleep for management of diabetes. She also stated the importance of timely review check-ups.
Dr. Mitali Rajkowa, Head of Department (Nutrition and Dietetics) at Ayursundra Super Specialty Hospital, Guwahati, brought valuable insights. Covering essential topics like carbohydrate counting, the role of proteins in dietary management, and the concepts of glycemic index and glycemic load, Dr. Rajkowa’s expertise enriched the discussions.
Dr. Mitali Rajkowa, HOD (Nutrition and Dietetics) at Ayursundra Super Specialty Hospital, illuminated key aspects of diabetes management, delving into carbohydrate counting, the role of proteins, and the concepts of glycemic index and glycemic load. Dr. Natasha R Marak, Assistant Professor (FSN), skillfully moderated in-depth discussions, focusing on the inclusion of locally available fiber-rich foods suitable for individuals with diabetes.
During the technical sessions, MSc students showcased cooked food items with detailed nutrient information, providing practical insights into diabetic-friendly meals. Dr. Namita Singh, Dean I/C, underscored the significance of World Diabetes Day celebrations. She emphasized that a collaborative effort involving doctors, nutritionists, and nurses could effectively convey the right message to the public regarding Diabetes Mellitus management.
It must be noted that World Diabetes Day is celebrated across the globe on November 14th, as a mass awareness campaign in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes.
