Tura, May 31: The Office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry & Territorial Division, South Garo Hills, Baghmara, launched the World Environment Day 2024 celebrations with a drawing and painting competition for school children from classes 1 to 7.
The three-day competition was divided into two categories: classes 1-5 and classes 6-7. This year’s theme is “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.” The event aims to raise awareness and inspire young minds about the importance of environmental conservation.
On the second day of the celebrations, the Office of the Divisional Forest Officer conducted an essay competition for older students from various schools. The participants wrote essays on topics related to this year’s theme.
On the third day, a cleaning drive for the A’sim Chiring stream in A’sim Chiring village was conducted by the same department. Saplings were also planted in village households and near the water body.
Village residents and citizens of Baghmara were invited to participate in the event. Although turnout was low, department staff managed to clean the stream, which is crucial for the village’s water supply. This community effort aimed to improve the local environment.
The competition will conclude on Friday and the winners will be awarded prizes and certificates.
