Nongpoh, Jan 27: Members of Seng Samla Downgate on Wednesday night apprehended four drug addicts including one drug peddler and seized one can containing cocaine from them while patrolling the area.
Mentionably, many theft cases have been reported from different parts of Nongpoh, which is suspected to be linked to the drug addicts.
The arrested drug addict has been identified as Baiakmenlang Tiewsoh (30) who is also the alleged drug peddler and Ravi Sunar who hails from Downgate and one Amanlang Khongshei (24) of 20 Mile Ri Bhoi District while the fourth person is yet to be identified.
The members of the youth club led by Lumlang Shylla had laid a trap at Down Gate area and around 10 pm they managed to apprehend two people including the drug peddler and through the lead of the drug peddler another two came to the spot and were apprehended by the youth club members.
After apprehending these drug addicts, member of the club informed the police of Nongpoh Police Station who arrived at the spot and conducted the enquiry and a can container was seized which was filled with cocaine. Later, the police took these persons to police station and a case under NDPS act was filed against them.
Speaking to the media, Lumlang Shylla and Remijus Lyngdoh said the Dorbar Shnong of Nongpoh has been on alert and always keeps close watch on the moves of these drug addicts and drug peddlers as these days drug menace has become widespread in their area which can be dangerous for the society, especially for the youth.
During the course of interrogation, they said, they learnt that around 50 to 60 youth in the area are involved in taking drugs which is a very alarming and can not only affect the lives of their people but also the peace and tranquillity in the area.
The members of the Youth Club have strongly demanded the Police to take stern action against the drug peddlers and drug addicts so that the menace of drugs can be eliminated from Nongpoh area.
