Guwahati, Dec 31: On what should have been a night of celebration, a sombre tragedy has shaken Assam’s Kamrup district. The body of Dharmendra Nath, a youth missing for five days, was found in a pond in Rangia on Monday, his hands and legs tied, leaving his family and friends devastated.
Nath, who had gone out for a picnic with friends last week, fell victim to a brutal altercation after an accident involving his bike and a car escalated into violence. Reports indicate that a group of 12 men attacked Nath and his companions. While some managed to escape, Nath was left behind, beaten mercilessly, and ultimately killed.
The family, concerned after Nath failed to return home, lodged a missing complaint, which led to the grim recovery of his body.
Police have arrested two suspects, Himangshu Kakati and Amulya Lahkar, in connection with the case. “We have arrested two persons and initiated an investigation. They have revealed little about their involvement during interrogation,” said a police official.
Allegations have emerged suggesting that the suspects are influential individuals with political connections, which may have emboldened their actions and potentially hindered the investigation.
