Shillong, Nov 24: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday emphasised on the importance of preserving the state’s unique culture and heritage, stressing that the youth should remain connected with their roots as well as engage in video documentation, literature creation, photography, and cultural research.

Addressing the Tri-Hills Ensemble festival inaugural ceremony on Friday, the Chief Minister stressed the significance of understanding and cherishing one’s roots, especially in today’s world of technology. “Youths need to be reminded of our roots,” he further stressed.

Highlighting the government’s strategy, the Chief Minister outlined the necessity of ensuring that the younger generation remains connected to their cultural roots. He stressed that maintaining a strong sense of identity and heritage is essential for navigating the complexities of the modern world.

“Only when you are firm with your roots and identity, you will be ensured that you will be able to move forward in a proper manner in today’s world,” he expressed.

Art and culture, according to the CM, are intrinsically linked to individual’s identity, setting communities apart and defining their uniqueness in the broader global context. He reiterated the government’s commitment to celebrating and preserving this distinct identity.

Acknowledging the urgency of proper cultural documentation, he urged the youth to create movies, write literature, capture moments through photography, and conduct comprehensive research, emphasizing the lack of substantial documentation in the state.

“Please make movies regarding our culture and history, please write books of our culture, please click pictures and whatever research can be done … please do it because we are very weak in our documentation,” he said.

Promising governmental support for those who desire to write books, filmmaking, and cultural research, the Chief Minister urged action, warning that without proper documentation, cultural legacies risk fading away with time.
