19-year-old girl missing in Dibrugarh for 15 days; family suspects kidnapping, alleges police inaction

Must read

Dibrugarh, Dec 9: A 19-year-old girl from Dibrugarh has been missing for over two weeks, with her family now alleging police inaction and suspecting that she may have been kidnapped.

Barsha Gope, daughter of Ranjit Gope of Kadomoni, KC Gogoi Path near SKV School, disappeared on November 25, 2025. According to the family, Barsha left her workplace around lunchtime, saying she was going home—but she never reached home and never returned to work. Her last traced location was Grambazar, Dibrugarh.

Her family immediately filed a missing person FIR at Gabhrupathar Police Outpost, but claims that no substantial progress has been made.

“Since the day she went missing, we have been running from one office to another. First, Gabhrupathar Outpost, then Dibrugarh Police Station, Crime Branch, and even the DC Office. Everywhere we were just told to wait,” said Barsha’s sister, Anamika Gope.

The family says the prolonged uncertainty has severely affected the health of Barsha’s parents and grandmother, who are under immense stress.

In their search efforts, the family also approached Banipur NF Railway, where they examined nearly five hours of CCTV footage with railway officials—but found no clues. Anamika said most CCTV cameras in their locality were non-functional, further complicating the investigation.

Barsha’s family also informed police about her boyfriend, Vivek Mandal of Gangapara, who they say is cooperating and searching for her as well. Police have already questioned him, but no leads have emerged. According to Anamika, Barsha’s final phone call before she went missing was with Vivek.

“We suspect kidnapping. It has been 15 days—no clue, no progress. We are helpless. We urge Dibrugarh Police to act swiftly and find my sister,” Anamika added.

Barsha had been working at Rayan Store for the past one and a half years. While her relationship with her boyfriend was reportedly stable, the family says they have no idea what might have happened.

Sources in Dibrugarh say incidents of kidnapping and human trafficking have been increasing in parts of Upper Assam, raising concerns over the vulnerability of young women and migrant workers.

Police have yet to issue an official statement on the progress of the investigation.
