Shillong, June 15: Meghalaya police made two arrests on Thursday as intensified operations continue in the state against drug smuggling and peddling.
In the first operation, a 41-year-old man from Manipur was arrested along with heroin in East Jaintia Hills District on Thursday. Shokhothang Touthang was arrested at Nongsning by the ANTF team and Khliehriat police during a naka checking at BMS fuel station, district SP Jagpal Singh said.
26 soap cases containing heroin weighing 278.03gm were also seized from his possession, he said. Touthang was proceeding from Aizawl towards Shillong.
A case has been registered at the Khliehriat police station and investigation is on to reveal the backward and forward linkages.
In second operation, one person identified as Sujit Paul was arrested with heroin in the district. Paul tried to evade the naka but he was detained. During preliminary questioning he revealed that he was carrying a consignment of illegal contraband in the vehicle which is meant to be delivered to Shillong.
Accordingly search of the vehicle was conducted and 33 soap boxes containing heroin weighing 353.34 gm were found concealed in the dicky of the vehicle. Cash of Rs 4,700 and Mahindra Scorpio (MZ 01D 6525) was also seized from his possession.
