Tura, Feb 9: In a bid to provide students with greater exposure to the world of science and technology, the Tura Science Center in Babupara is taking schools students for an educational excursion to Science City, Kolkata.
Leaving Tura on Sunday, the week-long trip will take 27 students from different schools and colleges across the Garo Hills region to various scientific museums, industrial museums, IITs, and science shows.
For many students, this will be their first opportunity to explore science and technology outside Meghalaya, offering them valuable learning experiences beyond the four walls of their classroom.
Funding for this excursion has been provided by the CM Youth Development Fund, the West Garo Hills District Administration and contributions raised by the members of the center.
What is interesting is that the students will submit a detailed report to the District Administration upon their return, documenting their experiences and insights gained from the trip.
Speaking to Hub News, Dr. Madhusudan Saha, Secretary of the Tura Science Center, emphasized the significance of such excursions:
“The aim of these trips is to expose students to scientific institutions, technological advancements, and research centers. By visiting science museums and attending science shows, they not only gain knowledge but also develop confidence and motivation to pursue careers in STEM fields. Many of these students have never had an opportunity to explore science beyond their state, making this a crucial learning experience.”
Parents have also expressed their support for the initiative. Sunil G. Momin, a parent of one of the students attending the trip, shared his thoughts, “I believe such exposure trips will not only benefit my child but also every student participating in this program. Learning outside textbooks is essential for their growth and future prospects.”
The Tura Science Center, established in 1973, has been organizing similar excursions annually, depending on the availability of funds.
The center is affiliated with Vigyan Prasar, New Delhi, an initiative under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
