Tura, May 21: Five members of a family from Aguragre village in Rongram Block of West Garo Hills had to be rushed to hospital for emergency medical treatment following a suspected case of food poisoning on Sunday.

The victims included two children and a 70+ grandmother who was brought in with severe dehydration and shock.

Doctors at the Jengjal Sub-Divisional Hospital managed to resuscitate all the victims and are nursing them back to health.

But there are conflicting reports over what caused the family to be rushed to hospital. The family members have claimed that the victims ate a mixture of brinjal and pumpkin for food on Saturday and developed symptoms the next morning. The vegetables were reportedly purchased from a local market.

But medical experts strongly suspect that it could be a case of drinking contaminated water given the symptoms of bacterial infection.

Health teams have visited Aguragre village and met with the affected family members and the district food inspector has also stepped in to probe the cause of the medical case.

Meanwhile, Doctors have advised the public to be extra cautious given the arrival of the monsoon season when water bodies swell with all types of residue brought down by the rains.

Wash vegetables and even eggs thoroughly

Eat freshly cooked food and don’t keep leftovers for possibility of food going stale.

Don’t use the same cutting board for vegetables and meat as there is a very high risk of cross contamination from viruses and bacteria from meat products.
