Shillong, Jan 22: The 53rd Anniversary of Meghalaya Statehood Day was celebrated on Tuesday in Jowai which was attended by Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, as the Chief Guest. Also present during the celebration were Guest of Honour, Deputy Chief Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar and Special Guests, Minister, Information & Public Relations, Ampareen Lyngdoh and Ambassador to India, Embassy of Republic of Uzbekistan, Sardor Mirzayusupovich Rustambaev.
Addressing the gathering Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, recalled and acknowledged the contributions of the great leaders of the state who had fought relentlessly during the hill state movement for statehood.
“We also remember and acknowledge the contributions of the past governments, cabinet ministers, bureaucrats and officials and also the efforts of the community, the church and religious leaders, and every citizen who has contributed in small or big ways to making Meghalaya what it is today,” he said.
The Chief Minister also said that the diversity of the State should be celebrated and it was for this reason that an important celebration like the Meghalaya Day is being celebrated in different parts of the State and added, “We decided to do it show the importance of the day to the people especially the younger generation and also to ensure that the government reach out to the people and celebrate this grand occasion together with them. This has also been exemplified in other programs like the Meghalaya Games that is being held in different places across the State.”

He also said that the day calls for introspection and looking back at the visions with which the leaders fought for statehood. He urged the people to move forward with the same principles and ideals of unity that guided the hill state movement and stressed on the need to familiarise the younger generation of the significance of the day.
The Chief Minister also launched the revised state anthem during the day and also distributed the Meghalaya Day Excellence Awards. The Meghalaya Day Awards and Governor’s Police Medals were also announced the awards of which will be given during the Republic Day celebrations. Cultural songs and dances of the state were showcased by various artists during the occasion.
