58 newly elected MDCs take oath in KHADC and JHADC

Shillong, Feb 27: The two autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills region witnessed the swearing-in ceremony of 58 newly elected members on Thursday.

In the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), the oath of office was administered to 29 members by East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah at the council’s hall in Shillong. Former KHADC chief and United Democratic Party (UDP) MDC from Sohra, Titosstarwell Chyne, was the only member to take his oath in Khasi, while the rest opted for English.

Among the newly sworn-in members were three MLAs: Synshar Roy Kupar Lyngdoh (Nongspung-Sohiong) and Pius Marwein (Langrin) from UDP, and Sosthenes Sohtun (Jirang) from the National People’s Party (NPP).

Four women MDCs were also elected to the KHADC: Deiti Majaw (Laitumkhrah-Malki) and Aibandaplin L Nonglait (Mylliem) from the Voice of the People Party (VPP), and Grace Mary Kharpuri (Nongshken) and Rona Khymdeit (Nongpoh) from NPP. Notably, all 17 VPP MDCs are first-time members of the district council.

In the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner administered the oath of office to 29 members. JHADC Chief Thombor Shiwat, along with four former Chief Executive Members (CEMs) – Hambertus Nongtdu, Madonbai Rymbai, Andrew Shullai, and Moonlight Pariat – also took the oath.

The party-wise composition of JHADC includes 14 MDCs from NPP, 8 from VPP, 3 from UDP, 3 from Congress, and 1 Independent.
