Accident near Songsak; Home minister convoy hits biker, victim dies

Tura, Jan 13: In a major tragedy one of the police vehicles escorting Meghalaya Home Minister from Shillong to Williamnagar for a high level meeting relating to law and order on Thursday morning collided head on with a motorcyclist leading to the death of the biker and serious injury to the pillion rider.

The incident took place at Kera, on the Songsak road not far from Williamnagar town at 1:30 in the afternoon.

Home minister Lakhmen Rymbui was in his official vehicle and part of the convoy coming from Shillong through the Nongstoin-Williamnagar-Tura highway for a review meeting with superintendents of police from Garo Hills.

One of the pilot police gypsy vehicles belonging to East Garo Hills District Executive force (DEF) escorting the home minister at the back of the convoy rammed straight on with the motorcyclist who was going from Williamnagar side towards Songsak.

The collision was at high speed killing the biker and leaving the pillion rider grievously injured and admitted to Williamnagar civil hospital.

The deceased has been identified as Joakim Marak (45 years) hailing from Dimit Rongtatgittim of Dobu village in east Garo Hills.

“The accident took place at high speed and it seems the biker was on the wrong side as his motorcycle crossed the middle divider mark of the road and veered towards the other side” informed East Garo Hills SP Bruno A Sangma.

A medical done on the police driver came with a clean chit and a post mortem has been conducted on the deceased.

“Immediate assistance to the family of the victim is being provided and necessary action will follow depending on the police report enquiry. We have already registered a case,” informed Superintendent of Police Bruno A Sangma.
