ACHIK NGO member killed in assault in West Garo Hills; police launch manhunt

Tura, Jan 9: A member of the ACHIK NGO was beaten to death by unidentified assailants in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district on Friday.

According to a press statement issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, the incident occurred around 2 pm at Goalgaon under Rajabala Police Station. The victim, Dilseng M. Sangma, a resident of Amokgre in Phulbari, was allegedly assaulted by unknown persons.

Sangma was initially taken to Bhaitbari Community Health Centre and later referred to Tura Civil Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries while being shifted.

Police teams have been deployed to trace those involved in the attack, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators at the earliest, the release said.

In view of the incident, district police have appealed to the public to maintain peace and communal harmony, and cautioned against the circulation of unverified or provocative content on social media, warning that such actions could disturb public order.

The district administration has also initiated steps to constitute a Peace Committee as a preventive measure.

Authorities have urged citizens to share any information related to the incident or suspicious activities with the nearest police station or the Police Control Room in Tura. Dedicated contact numbers have been issued to assist the investigation.
