Tura, Jan 10: A member of the ACHIK NGO was beaten to death by unidentified assailants in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district on Friday, raising serious concerns over law and order prompting the administration to consider stringent preventive measures, including a night curfew and temporary suspension of internet services.
Police said the incident occurred around 2 pm at Goalgaon under Rajabala Police Station. The victim, identified as Dilseng M. Sangma (son of Gaban Ch. Marak) of Amokgre village in the Phulbari area, suffered grievous injuries in the assault. He was first taken to Bhaitbari Community Health Centre and later referred to Tura for advanced treatment but succumbed to his injuries en route.

Following the killing, multiple police teams have been deployed to trace and apprehend those involved. Senior officials said security has been tightened across sensitive areas to prevent any escalation of tension.
Rajabala MLA Mizanur R Kazi said he has urged the district administration to take all necessary preventive steps to ensure peace. “Measures such as imposing a night curfew and temporarily suspending internet services are being considered to stop the spread of rumours or inflammatory content,” he said, adding that a peace committee meeting will be held on Friday to maintain calm.
The MLA expressed condolences to the bereaved family and strongly condemned the attack, assuring that those responsible would face strict action. He also warned that legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to disturb communal harmony.

Earlier, district police appealed to the public to remain calm and refrain from sharing unverified or provocative content on social media, cautioning that misinformation could aggravate tensions. The district administration has also initiated steps to constitute a Peace Committee to help restore confidence among residents.
Police have urged citizens to cooperate with the investigation and share any information related to the incident or the perpetrators with the nearest police station or the Police Control Room in Tura. Information can also be provided through the helpline numbers 8837423053, 7005530510 and 9089199064.
