Guwahati, Aug 10: AIUDF leaders on Sunday launched a broadside against the Himanta Biswa Sarma government accusing it of weaponising state machinery for electoral gain and targeting minorities under the guise of law-and-order measures.
AIUDF general secretary and MLA Hafiz Rafiqul Islam, flanked by MLA Ashraful Hussain, launched a scathing attack on the Chief Minister — who also holds the Home portfolio — alleging that “goons” were being “instigated” to harass bona fide Indian citizens, including labourers and lawyers. Islam demanded the CM’s resignation and went as far as calling for President’s Rule in the state, accusing Sarma of failing to uphold constitutional rights.

On eviction drives, Islam alleged that the BJP-led government was deliberately targeting Muslims and displacing families without rehabilitation to polarise voters ahead of elections. “If they were foreigners, arrest them and prove it. But the CM knows very well there is not a single foreigner here,” he said, charging the state with creating “a false narrative to feed the BJP’s political appetite.”
The AIUDF also hit out at the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, branding it a “political stunt” aimed at intimidating communities already subjected to years of NRC scrutiny. Islam warned that the Election Commission risked losing credibility if it “continued acting like a puppet of the BJP.”
