Shillong, July 6: Following the concerns raised about the recent dumping of medicines at Marten landfill on June 29, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Wednesday has directed the Director of National Health Mission to immediately form a committee
Lyngdoh mentioned that once this committee is formed they will take the next course of action. The health minister who was not happy about the dumping of medicines said that she will ensure that such incidents do not occur again and that whoever is responsible action will be taken against them.
“Fact of the matter remains how did anyone get access into the landfill of the municipal board at Marten? Were there any indents made and who allowed this vehicle passage who disposed off this medicine? See so many problems need to be attended to. You can’t just walk in into the landfill and dispose whatever you want at your whims and fancies. There are procedures, so if these procedures were adhered to likely we would have averted this error and this is an error which we cannot allow to reoccur,” mentioned Lyngdoh.
The minister did receive a preliminary report from the level of the DHS and this has now been sent to the bureaucrats to examine it.
Earlier, NGOs met the minister to ask whether or not it is an environmental hazard and that dumping of medicine could contaminate water sources.
When asked about the cost of the dumped medicines, Lyngdoh said that it was currently unavailable.
“The very fact that consignments included medicines from 2019 onwards ..so during the pandemic CHCs and PHCs were not functional because there was this fear of COVID and fear of going to hospitals and other things. Please give me some time I am inquiring, let the Inquiry report come before me,” added Lyngdoh
