Williamnagar, Mar 5: The programme Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action (ASMITA), in collaboration with the Government of India’s Khelo India initiative, will celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, with a special sports event in Williamnagar.
Students and youth have been invited to actively participate in the celebration.
Addressing a press conference, the Joint Director of My Bharat Kendra, Williamnagar, Linda B.K. Sangma, informed that this year the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India has advised that International Women’s Day be celebrated in a unique and meaningful way by promoting the Fit India movement and encouraging greater participation of women and girls in sports and physical fitness activities such as athletics and football.
She further stated that Williamnagar district has been selected as one of the venues to host football matches for girls in the Under-13 to 15 and Under-15 to 18 age categories as part of the national ASMITA initiative.
According to her, only 250 districts across India have been selected for this programme, and Williamnagar is fortunate to be among them.
The event will be held on Sunday, March 8, starting from 10:00 AM at the Rongrenggre Synthetic Football Turf. Although the day falls on a Sunday, the programme will be conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Government of India.
Linda B.K. Sangma extended an open invitation to school and college students, sports enthusiasts, and members of the public to attend the event and support the young athletes.
She emphasized that the initiative aims to inspire young girls to pursue sports, promote physical fitness, and empower women through active participation in sports and games.
The celebration is expected to bring together students, sports lovers, and the community to mark International Women’s Day while encouraging the spirit of sportsmanship and women’s empowerment in the region.
