Guwahati, March 27: In a tragic incident, an 8-year-old girl was trampled to death by wild elephant while her 10-year-old sister was critically injured in Assam’s Baksa district.
The incident took place in Deochunga village under Goreswar police station of Baksa district, which comes under the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), on Sunday morning when both the sisters were in deep sleep.
According to reports, the wild elephant razed their kutcha house and the 8-year-old, identified as Birgwsri Daimary, died on the spot.
“The attack happened at 5.15 am when the sisters and their family members were sleeping. The wild elephants come out from the forest in search of food,” said a forest official.
Forest officials said of the four-member family, only the parents had a narrow escape while their elder daughter is being treated at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the doctors of which said she is stable but remains in critical condition.
Man-elephant conflict has been rising in Assam and over 900 people have died in elephant attacks in state in the past 10 years.
