Guwahati, June 29: Police arrested All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) legislator Nizam Uddin Chowdhury under attempt-to-murder charges in Assam’s Hailakandi district for allegedly attacking a minority morcha member of the BJP.
According to police, Nizam Uddin Chowdhury attacked BJP’s minority morcha member Ataur Rahman Laskar on Tuesday night while he was returning home.
The MLA from Algapur assembly constituency along with three other leaders from his party allegedly attacked the BJP leader.
Ataur lodged an FIR against four individuals including Nijam Uddin at Panchgram Police Station immediately after the incident on Tuesday night.
Ataur in his FIR wrote that Nijam Uddin along with a group of people stopped his vehicle near Dhaleswar point at around 11:30pm.
Police said that after receiving the FIR, they investigated the matter initially and registered a case against four persons including Nijam Uddin at Panchgram Police Station (case no. 59/23).
“They are being booked under 307 (attempt to murder), 427 (causing damage to property amount of fifty rupees or more) 353 (assaulting on-duty public servant) 148 (assembling or rioting with deadly weapons) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” police said.
