Guwahati, May 7: In a surprising turn of events, Atul Bora, Senior BJP MLA from the Dispur constituency in Assam, cast his vote in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections today. This comes after Bora had previously taken a solemn oath, known as a “Bhishma Pratigya,” not to participate in the voting process for a specific reason.
Earlier, he confirmed to the reporters that he would abstain from voting for some reasons, which he cannot reveal publicly. He informed them that he would engage in other work instead of exercising his democratic right. The decision by a sitting MLA to abstain from the democratic process drew criticism from various quarters. However, Bora broke his vow and arrived at the polling booth to cast his vote.
Speaking to media outside the polling booth, he said, “I never came out of my home on Tuesdays. There are many reasons behind this. I lost my father, mother, and brother on Tuesday. This day is also known as the Day of Hanuman. There are many other reasons behind my decision not to cast a vote. I also observe a fast every Tuesday and don’t interact with others during the fast.”
He further clarified that, after receiving repeated calls from his colleagues and well-wishers, he changed his mind and decided to cast his vote. However, this was the first and last time he came out of his house on Tuesday.
