Guwahati, Jan 15: Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu was celebrated across Assam with pomp and gaiety on Sunday. People burnt ‘Meji’ (Bonfire), which is a tradition of Assamese society. People observed the much-awaited festival Magh Bihu in the state with much enthusiasm and zeal.
Traditional games related to the Bihu festival such as tug of war, running races, Kukura Juj (Cock Fight by Man) etc were organised during the festival across the state.
People were seen eating ‘pithas’, ‘larus’ and other delicacies after lighting up the Meji. In Guwahati, people woke up early morning and lit Meji as a traditional age-old custom. “We have woken up early morning and after taking bath, we have lit Meji and take blessing from our elders,” said a resident of Guwahati.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma greeted the people of the state on the occasion of Bhogali Bihu. In a statement, Sarma said, “I extend my heartiest wishes to the people of Assam on the occasion of Bhogali Bihu.”
