Boko, May 26: Corruption and irregularities have allegedly become integral parts of the Boko Sub-Division of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department in the Kamrup district of Assam. Ground reality and reactions from locals suggest that PHED officials are fooling villagers by committing corruption and irregularities in the name of providing pure drinking water.
A few days ago, massive irregularities and corruption in the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) works at the Hahim area along the Assam-Meghalaya border were revealed. Now, corruption is alleged in the Lampi area under the Boko Sub Divisional PHE office.
Lampi is located in the Kamrup (Rural) District, some 100 kilometers from the state capital. According to the village headman, Krishna Sharma, more than 300 families live in the Lampi area, which is full of mountains.
Biju Chetry from Lampi village expresses regret that even though Indian citizens celebrate the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ to mark 75 years of Independence, the people of the Lampi area are still deprived of pure drinking water by the government.
Chetry expressed his concerns about PHED’s alleged corruption, stating that despite regular government grants, the department has failed to provide safe drinking water to the villagers.
He added that he learned in 1990 that the state government would work for pure drinking water in the Lampi area. However, no family received water from the water supply scheme in the Harshanagar area, and no families have received a drop of pure drinking water. However, according to departmental documents, the people of Lampi get water.
When asked about the project and JJM Scheme implementation in Lampi, SDO Mukut Barman replied that he is not responsible for the Lampi scheme or the JJM scheme, as they were not allowed during his tenure.
Yet he alleged that the neighbouring state of Meghalaya closed the Dam, where Assam PHED wanted to supply water to the Lampi area. Now, the Meghalaya state has changed the direction of the stream and its use for its JJm scheme implementation.
However, the village headman, Krishna Sharma, directly opposed the allegation that Meghalaya had closed the dam.
SDO Mukut Batman also emphasized that the JJM scheme would be implemented with the help of a deep tube well. He added that the (Detailed Project Report) DPR team surveyed the Lampi area recently, and work will start soon.
Villagers of the Lampi area have now raised an important question: How long will the PHE department waste crores of rupees that the government granted to supply drinking water to every household in the Lampi area?
