Assam court denies bail to three accused in Zubeen Garg death case; prime accused seeks discharge

Must read

Guwahati, Jan 30: A sessions court in Guwahati on Friday rejected bail applications filed by three accused in the death case of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

The Kamrup Metropolitan Sessions Court denied bail to singer Amritprava Mahanta, named as one of the principal accused, and Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, who were serving as Zubeen Garg’s personal security officers at the time of the incident.

In a parallel development, Siddhartha Sarma, Zubeen Garg’s former manager and the prime accused in the case, has moved a fresh discharge petition, seeking to be released from the charges framed against him. The court is expected to hear the petition on a later date.

The order comes amid ongoing trial proceedings in which several accused have sought relief through bail and discharge pleas over successive hearings.

Zubeen Garg died in Singapore on September 19, 2025, reportedly during a swimming-related incident, days before he was scheduled to perform at the North East India Festival. While the death was initially described as accidental, a subsequent Assam Police investigation led to allegations of criminal negligence and murder, dramatically altering the course of the case.

A chargesheet was later filed against seven accused, including Garg’s manager, security personnel and others associated with him. The prosecution has listed nearly 394 witnesses, making it one of the most complex and closely watched criminal trials in recent years in Assam.

Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, has consistently maintained that her husband’s death was not accidental and has pressed for a stringent prosecution and speedy trial. She had earlier urged the state government to establish a special court and ensure a robust public prosecution team, citing the gravity and scale of the case.

The trial court has indicated that it is proceeding with caution, given the seriousness of the charges and the voluminous evidence on record.
