Guwahati, Jan 6: 21-year-old Neeraj Bishnoi, the creator of the controversial Bulli Bai app, was arrested by Delhi police from Assam’s Jorhat district on Thursday.
Neeraj Bishnoi is a second year B.Tech student from the Vellore Institute of Technology in Bhopal. He is a resident of Assam’s Digambar, Jorhat.
The police also seized a device from his home on which the app was created.
Three people were earlier arrested in the case by the Mumbai Police, including the prime accused – 18-year-old Shweta Singh.
Jorhat SP Ankur Jain said, “A team led by DCP from Delhi police contacted me. They came with lead; they came here to search for Neeraj Bishnoi. We have located him. They asked our help; we had gone with them and arrested him.”
“We have heard about the Bulli Bai app on-line. We came to know the guy is doing some… (acts) against women on post. For that Delhi police had come here. He is 21 yrs old from Digambar Charali, Jorhat. Everything has been seized. It’s not our case… No arrest of from family member. What we heard was that he was in Rajasthan and in Assam from December 24.”
The SP said, “What we came to know and communicated to us that the IP address (used) is (of) this arrested person. It’s a matter of Delhi police. He was arrested yesterday night, (he’s) already reached Delhi. We can’t comment about his family.”
Dasarath Bishnoi, father of Neeraj Bishnoi, said, “Around 11 to 11.15 pm yesterday night they (police) had come straight way, they told me they are from Delhi police. They asked is this Neeraj’s residence? I told them yes, please. They said to open the gate, I told please come. Neeraj was sleeping then. (The police) wake up (Neeraj) and asked (him to) bring laptop. Neeraj studied in Jorhat ST Merry School, came 1st in matric with 86%. He was in home doing on-line. He (was) always busy with the laptop.”
Police have arrested Mayank Rawal (21) from Uttarakhand in the early hours of Wednesday in the case, while engineering student Vishal Kumar Jha (21) was held from Bengaluru on Monday.
Hundreds of Muslim women were listed for “auction” on the “Bulli Bai” mobile application with photographs sourced without permission and doctored. The app appeared to be a clone of “Sulli Deals” which triggered a similar row last year.
