Guwahati, Dec 19: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday carried out extensive raids across 17 locations in four states as part of an ongoing probe into a high-profile inter-state arms trafficking case. The raids, conducted at 15 premises linked to accused and suspects, spanned Bihar (12 locations), Nagaland (3 locations), Haryana (1 location), and Jammu & Kashmir (1 location).
The investigation, linked to case RC-11/2024/NIA/DLI, focuses on the smuggling of prohibited weapons, including AK-47 rifles, from Nagaland and other northeastern states to various parts of the country, with Bihar emerging as both a key transit route and a destination for the trafficked arms.
During Wednesday’s raids, the NIA seized a .315 rifle, 11 live rounds, three empty cartridges, raw materials, and tools suspected to be used for firearm manufacturing. Officials also confiscated a car, Rs. 13.94 lakh in cash, digital devices including mobile phones, pen drives, and a memory card, as well as other incriminating documents.
The search operations targeted 11 suspects linked to four individuals who had been previously arrested and chargesheeted in the case.
Initial investigations suggest the accused have been engaged in arms trafficking for several years, with Bihar playing a significant role in the smuggling network. The NIA’s ongoing probe aims to dismantle the wider nexus involved in the illegal arms trade.
This case highlights the persistent challenge of arms trafficking through India’s northeastern corridors and its impact on internal security. The NIA has vowed to intensify its investigation to track down other suspects and trace the full extent of the trafficking network.
