Assam DGP GP Singh says charge sheets filed in 889 cases related to child marriage

Guwahati, March 17: Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh on Friday said over 4,300 cases of child marriage have been registered in Assam since February 3, and till date 889 cases of charge sheets have been filed so far.

Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Friday, DGP said, “We have registered 4,363 cases of child marriage since February 3. We have been able to file charge sheets in 889 cases till now and hopeful that remaining charge sheets will be filed by April end.”

Mentionably, Assam police have started a massive crackdown against child marriages in the state.

Meanwhile, the BJP-led government in Assam on Thursday announced Rs 200 crore mission to end the menace by 2026. The mission was announced in the state’s annual budget, which was presented in state assembly by state finance minister Ajanta Neog.

According to the details furnished by the state home department, Dhubri district topped the list in terms of child marriage cases and arrests, followed by Kokrajhar, South Salmara, Udalguri, Bongaigaon, Hojai, Cachar, Karimganj, and Morigaon districts.
