Assam eyes Bollywood for Lachit Borphukan biopic

Must read

Guwahati, July 16: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said Assam has moved a step closer to taking the story of legendary Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan to the national stage, announcing that he will meet National Award-winning filmmaker Aditya Dhar in August to discuss a proposed Bollywood-scale biopic on the iconic warrior.

The Uri: The Surgical Strike and Dhurandhar director is expected to hold detailed discussions with the Chief Minister on the project next month.

“We will discuss it in detail in August,” Sarma said during a Facebook Live session while responding to a query on making a film on Borphukan and his leadership in defeating the Mughal forces at the historic Battle of Saraighat in 1671.

The Chief Minister, however, made it clear that the project would go ahead irrespective of whether Dhar comes on board.

“If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors. Our objective is to ensure that a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan is made,” he said.

The proposed film forms part of the Assam government’s sustained effort to bring the state’s history and iconic personalities into the national mainstream.

Over the past few years, Lachit Borphukan—the commander who led the Ahom forces to victory against the Mughals at the Battle of Saraighat, has increasingly been projected as a symbol of courage, leadership and patriotism through public commemorations, educational initiatives and even discussions in Parliament.

A large-scale commercial film is expected to become one of the most powerful mediums to introduce his legacy to audiences across the country and beyond.

The Assam Budget 2026 had also proposed extending support to commercial films based on iconic Assamese personalities as part of the state’s broader strategy to showcase Assam’s rich history and cultural heritage to the world.

If the discussions with Dhar culminate in a collaboration, it would mark the first time the Assam government backs a Bollywood-scale feature film on Lachit Borphukan, potentially becoming the state’s most ambitious cinematic effort to take one of Assam’s greatest heroes to a global audience.
