Mokokchung, July 17: The Mokokchung district administration has barred heavy vehicles from using the Dikhu River Bailey Bridge on National Highway-202 after the structure was found to be in a deteriorated condition, a move expected to disrupt the transport of goods and essential supplies in the region.
In an order issued on Friday, Deputy Commissioner A. Jit Kumar Verma said only light motor vehicles (LMVs) and passenger vehicles will be allowed to ply on the bridge until further orders. The restriction will remain in force until the bridge is repaired and declared safe for heavy traffic.

Heavy goods vehicles have been directed to use alternate routes, including Mokokchung–Longmisa–Dikhu–Alisophur–Tronger–Tuensang, Tuensang–Chare–Mokokchung, and Suruhoto–Akuluto–Lumami–Mokokchung.
The diversion is expected to increase travel time and transportation costs for goods carriers, with transporters anticipating higher fuel expenses and logistical challenges. The restrictions could also impact the supply of construction materials, agricultural produce, fuel and other essential commodities, potentially affecting local businesses and pushing up prices.

The administration said heavy vehicles may be permitted to cross the bridge only in emergencies with prior approval from the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
The order has been issued as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents, with residents and transporters hoping that repair works are completed quickly to restore normal connectivity along the key highway.
