Assam Floods: Death toll rises to 52, over 24 lakh people affected

Guwahati, July 5: The devastating floods in Assam have claimed 52 lives, as of Friday, with the disaster continuing to wreak havoc across the state. Among the casualties, a minor boy in Guwahati and a mother and son in Khanapara lost their lives in a tragic landslide.

The second wave of flooding has impacted 24,20,722 people across 3,518 villages in 30 districts. The affected districts include Cachar, Kamrup, Hailakandi, Hojai, Dhubri, Nagaon, Morigaon, Goalpara, Dibrugarh, Nalbari, Dhemaji, Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Karimganj, South Salmara, Tinsukia, Charaideo, Barpeta, Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Chirang, Majuli, Biswanath, Darrang, Karbi Anglong West, and Kamrup (M).

In response to the crisis, authorities have established 273 relief camps and 339 relief distribution centers to aid the displaced population.

Several rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above the danger level at multiple locations such as Neamatighat, Goalpara, Guwahati, and Dhubri. Other rivers exceeding danger levels include Burhidihing at Chenimari (Khowang), Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Dhansiri at Numaligarh, Jia-Bharali at NT Road Crossing, Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul, Barak at Fulertal and AP Ghat, Katakhal at Matizuri, and Kushiyara at Karimganj.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for extremely heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, warning of further severe weather conditions in the coming days.
