Guwahati, May 22: Amid rising concerns that some sellers are using Carbide to ripen fruits in the city, the Food Safety Department of Assam today launched an operation against such unhealthy practices.

The department officials raided a few fruit shops suspected of selling carbide-ripened fruits in the busy Fancy Bazar area.

The officials also confiscated mango fruit samples from various shops that are suspected to be chemically ripened using Carbide.

It is worth mentioning that the use of Carbide or other chemicals to ripen fruits artificially is strictly prohibited under the law due to its potential health risks to consumers.

The department has urged consumers to be cautious while purchasing fruits and report any suspicious practices to the authorities.
