Tinsukia, Nov 5: In a shocking incident, a 55-year-old Imam was stabbed to death inside a mosque in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district on Sunday morning. What’s even more baffling is that after the gruesome act, the accused fled the scene, changed his dress and came back as an onlooker to witness the aftermath.

The person, identified as Maulana Tehzeeb Islam, hails from Bihar’s Purnia district. He was working as an Imam at a mosque in Tinsukia’s Makum Kolabari area.

Meanwhile, police have swung into action and arrested the prime accused. Police said the accused identified as Mohammad Ibrahim Ahmed (42), a local resident, entered inside the mosque with a machete and stabbed Maulana Tehzeeb Islam several times.

“When I saw the man attacking the Imam with a machete while he was praying in the morning, I tried to stop him from behind. I dragged him outside the mosque, but he shoved me and managed to flee. I then called for assistance, but no one responded because it was too early in the morning. The Imam was killed on the spot,” an eyewitness told media persons.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the area.

The Makum police reached the spot and recovered the body for post-mortem.

“The Imam died on the spot and the accused fled leaving behind the murder weapon. He changed his bloodstained dress and came back with the locals pretending as an onlooker. But we managed to identify and detain him,” a police official said.

Police said that they have registered a case against Ibrahim Ahmed under section 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and arrested him.

The locals staged a protest after the incident and demanded strict punishment for Ibrahim.

Police said that the case has been solved as the prime accused has confessed his crime. “He will be produced before the court today and we’ll submit the chargesheet quickly,” said police.
