Guwahati, Jan 5: Normal life in Assam was severely disrupted on Friday as the union of motor workers’ association enforced a 48-hour suspension of bus services across the state.
The strike aims to press for amendments to the recently implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, specifically addressing the stringent provisions related to hit-and-run cases. The union has given authorities a two-to-three-day ultimatum for addressing their concerns, and they have warned of extending the strike if their demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe.
“We are facing problems due to the strike. We have come here to visit the Kamakhya temple, but now we are waiting at the railway station for several hours. Now, we have to hire taxis or Ola cabs to go to our destination,” said a traveller.
The contentious provisions under the new law include treating causing death by rash and negligent driving as non-bailable offences and allowing for the arrest of drivers without a warrant or court permission.
“I have been waiting for the last two hours. I am not getting any vehicles. The strike has affected normal life in the city. Now the Uber and Ola cabs are charging triple,” said a resident of Guwahati.
The residents of Guwahati are facing the aftermath of the strike, which has affected normal life in the city. Trucks of essential commodities have been plying, but most of the vehicles are less.
“We are daily passengers, but today we have to walk to the office. The strike has affected normal life in the city,” said another passenger in Guwahati.
