Boko, Sept 8: Boko Police on Sunday apprehended a man from Jarapara on charges of extorting money in the name of the proscribed ULFA (Independent).
The accused has been identified as Shankar Rabha, a resident of Krishnai in Goalpara district.
Police sources said Rabha had demanded ₹1 lakh from Arbind Roy, a businessman of Bonggaon, Boko.
Acting on a complaint lodged by Roy, police laid a trap at Jarapara, where Rabha was caught red-handed while coming to collect the money.
Investigations revealed that the accused had earlier extorted ₹1 lakh from the same businessman. He had allegedly sent a demand note and a WhatsApp message introducing himself as “Lieutenant Nayan Asom” of ULFA (I) before making the demand.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Officer-in-Charge Munna Pachani of Boko Police Station. Rabha is currently under intensive interrogation.
A case (No. 281/2025) has been registered at Boko Police Station under Section 308(5) in connection with the incident.
