Assam-Meghalaya Border agreement: KHADC to move court

Must read

Shillong, April 26: The Border Committee of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Tuesday decided to move the Court on the Assam – Meghalaya border issue.

Assam and Meghalaya recently signed an MoU towards resolving the decades old interstate boundary issue between the two states, wherein disputes exist at 12 areas. The MoU has been signed to resolve 6 of the 12 areas of dispute.

Addressing media persons after the meeting, member of the committee as well leader of the opposition in KHADC, P.N. Syiem, said, “For this issue the boundary Committee has constituted a coordination committee to be headed by the Executive Member in-charge of Elaka, Jambor War, myself as the member of the coordination committee, along with the five Himas which are affected in the first phase of the MoU signed between the two states.”

The five Himas include – Hima Jirang, Hima Nongspung, Hima Mylliem, Hima Jyrngam and Hima Nonglang.

Syiem informed that the boundary Committee has entrusted the coordination committee to discuss all the relevant issues and the necessary steps to be taken up at the same time to report to the Boundary Committee for the final approval before they move to Court.

Asked as to when they will file the petition, Syiem said, “Very soon after the coordination committee sits and recommends to the Boundary Committee. (we) will file the petition as soon as possible to any Court as suggested by the coordination committee. As for which Court to be moved, it is too early to comment. It all depends on the wisdom of the coordination committee.”

Syiem also justified that they are compelled to approach the Court as all options are closed following the statement of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong that there is no chance to review the MoU signed.
