Assam: ONGC moves closer to capping operation

Must read

Guwahati, June 23: In a key breakthrough, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), with technical support from global well control experts Cudd Pressure Control, has successfully cleared a major portion of rig debris from the troubled Well RDS#147A site at Rudrasagar in Sivasagar district of Assam significantly advancing efforts toward the safe capping of the well.

Around 10 trailer loads of rig material have been safely removed by ONGC’s Crisis Management Team (CMT) and expert crew, allowing for mobilisation of heavy equipment necessary for the critical next phase—well capping. Preparations are also underway for the safe removal of tubing stacked on the elevated rig mast, with an extra-long boom crane being deployed shortly.

Air quality monitoring continues round-the-clock in the surrounding areas. Authorities have confirmed there are no hydrocarbon traces beyond a 30-metre radius of the well. Based on current safety assessments, residents living outside a 500-metre radius have been advised they can safely return home and resume regular activities, including cooking and use of electricity.

Meanwhile, a steady decline into gas pressure has been observed, creating more favourable conditions for the capping operation. Water blanketing continues uninterrupted to suppress any potential gas release.

ONGC is also extending full support to the District Administration at relief camps, offering 24/7 medical services and reaffirming its commitment to community safety and well-being.
